Missed Treatments


Upon completion of this module, dialysis facility personnel will be able to:
  • define non-adherence with dialysis treatments
  • recognize non-adherence as a situation in which a patient had a choice to attend or not attend treatment 
  • discuss the importance of non-adherence with patients
  • develop a process to address non-adherence with patients
  • decrease the number of missed treatments due to non-adherence
  • identify best practices to prevent safety errors
  • engage patients and families to enhance their culture of safety

Activities Required for Diamond Status/Measures: 

In order to receive Diamond Status, your facility must meet the measures listed below: 
  • 100% of staff complete in-service training module (PowerPoint Presentation) on missed treatments/patient non-compliance (available in English or Spanish)
  • Track/log individual patient missed days by reason treatment was missed (available in English or Spanish)
  • Provide feedback reports to patients indicating the number of days missed by reason and percent of actual treatments received vs. prescribed
  • Educate patients about the difference between normal kidney function (168 hours/week), dialysis (approx. 12 hours/week), and their actual treatment received
  • Decrease the total number of missed treatments due to non-adherence by >10%
  • Sustain the improvement (decrease by >10%) for at least three months
  • Complete online Reporting Form
